because there's this really common thing in american media where there absolutely has to be a white man in there somewhere having an important role in the story. there can't, under any circumstances, have no white main characters. ever.

the best friend could've been black, east or south asian, south american, hispanic, or asain pacific. they could've been literally any possible race under the sun besides white. but that's not allowed, and it's a problem. people have a right to be displeased by it.

I think people might also be wary of him being her love interest, because the whole WoC/white guy dynamic is so cliche.

It's...really not.

It's something I've been seeing in the Sleepy Hollow fandom. People are getting bent out of shape cause Ichabod and Abbie might end up together somewhere in the future and SO MANY PEOPLE (usually the Ichabod/Katrina shippers) use the "she's a baddass cop who needs no man" shtick and...that tends to be used ALL THE TIME with a WoC, especially a Black woman. It smacks of unintentional (or sometimes intentional) racism.

People tend to think WoC characters don't need a male (white or no) but it ends up being really sexist and/or racist after a while (look at the people who still make comments about Joan on Elementary...)

I don't how see it is cliche either. Interracial couples depicted in American media are rare and there's not nearly enough of white guy/black woman couples depicted for it to be cliche. And ugh, I hate that excuse. I've heard it used all the fucking time in various fandoms that I side-eye anyone who uses it.

I can understand not wanting Ichabod and Abbie to get together though. I'm kinda conflicted on it for a variety of reasons, mostly because I love platonic male/female friendships and since it happens so often for those friends to end up together in media, I'd love for them to just stay friends. But on other hand, I'd love to see more interracial relationships on tv so I probably wouldn't be too upset if they end up together.

If everyone in the story had been non-white, it would have significantly cut down the people willing to buy or invest in the comics, and you know that perfectly well.

You know what? I actually really agree with you.
