IMO genderbending existing characters can change minor dynamics of a relationship, but the dynamic as a whole is about the same.

True, but IMO it's different for fanfic than for canon. Like, if a writer of a TV show wrote a canon storyline for two guys that featured all kinds of tropes and narrative devices that are usually reserved for and expected for straight couples, the general feel of the gay version would be pretty different than the straight version.
