Cthulhu crossovers!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Any and all good fanfic (or published novels, if any exist) involving crossovers with/incorporation of Cthulhu stuff! I want all the recs!

An Evil Guest is Gene Wolfe writing a late period Gene Wolfe novel that is inspired by the Lovecraft mythos. But it's much more Gene Wolfe than Lovecraft (I really think it's arguably about whether it actually is Lovecraftian or not) so whether you'll like it depends whether you like Gene Wolfe and if you're okay with slightly bizarre novels whose actual plot is never explicitly stated.

There's a short Sherlock Holmes story published in a collection of pastiches that involve bizarre or supernatural elements called "The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" that has some major Lovecraftian elements. The name of the story is "The Horror of Many Faces", but I forget the author.

I remember enjoying some in Avengers fics with Cthulhu and/or Lovecraft mythology. I don't remember any title off the top of my head though, sorry. :(

Charles Stross' Archive series is essentially a combination of Cthulhu + James Bond + IT jokes.

I thought the first couple were pretty good, at least.

There is a Sherlock fic that has him as Cthulhu who visits John and has sex with him. John starts going crazy. http://etothepii.dreamwidth.org/15078.html

This game I found looking for the fic: http://www.containsmoderateperil.com/elementary-my-dear-cthulhu/

Cthulhu or lovecraft?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-11-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Cause if you mean specifically Cthulu or "Cthulu Stuff" meaning eldritch abominations and lovecraftian themses, there's a lot more to reccomend.

Cthulu was in an episode of the real Ghostbusters though

Still, there's a lot more out there if you want the whole mythos...

Collect Call of Cthulhu is the best episode of that show. They were all pretty great, but none of the other episodes had Venkman blasting Cthulhu from a rollercoaster. Also because my husband and I are total Lovecraft dweebs we were sitting around going "HURR HURR I UNDERSTAND THAT REFERENCE" all throughout.

As for other generalized Lovecraft things: LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT BRIAN YUZNA MOVIES. I particularly recommend the Re-Animator movies. The first one is the best, but Jeffrey Combs is amazing in all of them. From Beyond's great, too.

My husband would also like to recommend Charles Stross' Laundry Files novels. I've not read them yet, but he recommends them highly as being something like James Bond set in a Lovecraft universe. Actually, he has a whole long list of Lovecraft-related/Lovecraft-like stuff to recommend!

(Also, just for funsies, Ask Lovecraft on Youtube is great. It's short little Q&A videos answered in-character by our buddy Leeman, who is awesome. https://www.youtube.com/user/lemurbouy/videos)

Like I said Derek and I are huge Lovecraft dweebs, so we've got a stockpile of recommendations. Anything we see with some kind of cosmic horror element, we jump on it like a pack of dogs, we have a book-club discussion, and then we go around recommending it to other people. (Although I'm still trying to convince him to read some Junji Ito and watch some Chiaki J Konaka animes.)

Derek actually did a pretty long series of recommendations for Lovecraftian books and movies on his show last year, too (that's actually where Leeman started showing up as Lovecraft on the intarwubz).

Now I haven't read this since it was first posted so I don't remember everything, but it was good. Logan-centric.
