Re: It's not "a culture", it's a tv show

I'm the anon from a few comments up who wrote about the way Irish Travellers are treated around here. My point wasn't that they never do anything disagreeable, because that would be absurd. My point was that they're still people, that reality TV is often a huge exaggeration, and that even the parts of their culture you (and I!) might find uncomfortable or even downright wrong are still no excuse to paint them ALL with one big brush the way that OP suggested.

I can kinda see where people are coming from though if the others aren't publicly standing up and calling out the bullshit. And I find it a little bit weird when "omg don't judge this culture!!!" becomes so much more important to some people (or at least, seems to) than the actual misogynistic abusive stuff that is a really big problem and is hurting people so much more.

This. These disgusting things ARE part of their culture, it might not be ALL that their culture is, but still that kind of behaviour is encouraged, and showing it on tv like that isn't helping spreading the message that misogyny is not ok.

"and showing it on tv like that isn't helping spreading the message that misogyny is not ok"

No, it's not, but that's not the fault of the culture as a whole, that's the fault of REALITY FUCKING TELEVISION, people who cater to the cameras in making it, and gullible people who think it's reality.

Right, but they're not doing that because they're TravellersTM but because they're misogynist. There's elements of every culture that's vile and emphasising their identity while calling them out isolates an already isolated culture and worse, may contribute to the defensive 'omg don't judge this culture!!!' reaction.

I get the strong impression though that these cultural elements are more concentrated and less opposed in this particular culture.
