People who say their inbox "eats things a lot" are lying most of the time. They just don't want to respond. But if you're worried, send another message and don't worry if it's not word for word of your last one, which while probably well-written likely wasn't as amazeballs as you remember.

OP

It probably wasn't as good as in my mind. But still annoying and I wanted to vent. I've had the sneaking suspicion that this person lies about their inbox, but they're very polite and have answered stupid/awkward questions in the past that most other people would have ignored.

Orrrr their inbox actually eats things? I know for a fact that it's a rampant problem on tumblr, because the site itself is buggy as shit and the staff seem to care more about making minor stylistic changes than actually fixing any of the problems the userbase has. You really can't assign motivation like that without any proof.

Speaking of which, OP, did your prompt perhaps have ellipses in it? There was a post going around a while ago about which kinds of posts were more likely to get eaten, and the only one I remember (because it was the only one I ever do) was putting ellipses into the ask.

Or their inbox actually eats things?

Yes, this. My school's email system does this all the time--and somehow it seems to happen only to things that are actually important. I've had my emails to professors and HR disappear into nothingness, to the point where, if I don't hear back quickly from someone, I immediately begin to worry that they never got it. Not one but two "urgent" emails from HR to me disappeared the same way--not in my inbox, not in my spam file, not in my trash--zip, zero and zilch. TBH it's a wonder I even have a job. When I went to take it up with the IT guys, they were like "What do you expect us to do about it?"
