I'm not going to lie, I really wish they'd make a protag of color for Pokémon. I have for a while.

Er, well, that's a bit more moot now that it's all customizable, but it would still be cool to have the default character/the one who shows up in anime/the one in the game ads be not white.

I don't think it's super likely that we'll get a default protag of color, but Game Freak seems pretty good about diversity especially when the in game region is based on a real world location that has a lot. We did have Iris as a champion last gen and customization this gen which is a start.

I think somewhere in South America or Africa would be a really cool location to do next.

I think it's neat that the last three gens have had a female champions too. Now if only we had a female villian boss!

I agree about Iris (and also Lenora, who is one of my favorite gym leaders ever btw) but eh, it's not quite the same as the protag. *shrug*

Technically, you can in XY. You have three options to choose from with your trainer, so you can be a PoC if you so please. Though people complin she isn't dark enough....

To which I say, it's Japan. It's only taken them how many years to introduce TWO, only TWO PoC gym leaders (and one female WoC Champion)? While everyone else is "white" (i say white cause the last two gens (V and VI are set in the Pokemon world equivalents of France and the US) are not based on Japanese prefectures (if that's the right word. probably not).

Though this gen DOES have at least....3(?) trainer classes that you fight during the course of the game that has PoC (one is rising star, scientist, ranger, and...i can't remember if there's more).

They're working on it, but it's still Japan and they can still be rather racist with regards to PoC.

I did kind of go over that with the "you can, but it's not the same if it's not the cover one" thing

but yeah true about Japan and race, though part of it may just be that there aren't many POC in Japan
