The basis of the fic was that Jim had been abused as a child, and thus associated orgasm with his abuse. He wanted to find pleasure with his partners, but was unable to. There's nothing bad about that, other than poor Jim suffering child abuse. The story had nothing to do with Jim being asexual/grey scale or anything like that.
