not!secret 2: DUDE. CHILL PILL. Man what's wrong with canon that's not explicitly stated in the actual story? It's her creation, she can say what she wants about it.
Not like it wasn't bloody obvious anyway.

it's bad writing if she has to state now that he was gay. if it wasn't important in the story when she wrote it, why is it important for her to clarify it now?

She was asked during an interview about his past loves. Was she supposed to lie about that?

You do know that authors develop characters beyond what they actually write, partially to make them more realistic and partially because it just happens that way? For instance, one of my characters' favorite food is grilled cheese sandwiches, but I'll probably never include that in my writing because there's no point. It's not important.

Dumbledore being gay was not important to the story, so there was no point in revealing it over the course of the story. Then it would have been treated as only there for shock value and been chewed out even MORE. The fact that she only reveals it now doesn't make it any less true.

They totally do develop heaps of stuff beyond what's in the story itself. But it's still part of the character...

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The author will always know way more about their own characters than the reader will, because the author practically lived their lives with them. Incorporating it all into the story would be messy and awkward.

It wasn't specifically about Dumbledore being gay, she got asked a question, it doesn't bother me at all that she answered it. But she keeps piling on all these details about what so-and-so did later etc etc... even before book 7 came out, she kept giving all these spoilers and things... I just think it takes some of the fun out of it. :(

It's just plain lame that she waited until AFTER she wrote the last book to avoid bad publicity and/or gain more.

if there was no way to put it into the story, though, there's no way to put it into the story. I don't follow the books, but as a writer myself, I can kinda guess that there might just not have been a place for it without it being random or awkward.

Cuz apparently there was subtext. And if she was /asked/ the question (cuz apparently she was), yeah, she had a right to answer truthfully. And ANYTHING the creator says is canon.

Haha, good point.

But I disagree on this, just on principle. As an example, some author could just be joking around and then some numbnut decides to take it seriously. Yes, the author said it, but it's not canon. Should the people know the author was joking? Yes. Will they? Not likely, especially if they only skim an article or catch the tail end of a conversation. Or (another example) if somebody finds old manuscripts that end up getting sold later. The author wrote it, but it's not canon.

There's always exceptions to everything. But you can't pull out that argument here because what's being said doesn't fall under that exception. It was said in all seriousness and it was post the final part of the series, meaning it in all likely hood is concrete.

I was just pointing out that one sentence being unrealistic. It was a separate sentence on its own, so I wanted to point that out to you. I'm glad you understood what I was saying.

And I do understand what you're saying, and, in fact, agree. If she said it in seriousness, then it stands. But I still can't help but think, on her part, it may have partially been a publicity stunt.

I happen to think omitting Dumbledore's orientation was a brilliant move on her part. For serious. I mean, what would most people have paid attention to regarding Dumbledore if they had known he was gay in an earlier book? Would they have paid more attention to his immense character depth and strengths and vulnerabilities, or his immense character depth and strengths and vulnerabilities in conjecture with his homosexuality? Again, his orientation wasn't important, and that's what makes her decision so smart, so intelligent. The gay man in media is pigeonholed by his sexual desires and love life far too often. Dumbledore's orientation never defines everything his character is... it's simply something that he is, and no more. And that's phenomenally thoughtful.

Hmm... summing up my tl;dr up there, Rowling chose to make a strong, deep, gay character, instead of a strong, deep, gay character. And that is a refreshing change. ♥

... Though, um, I'm not lauding the smartness of announcing it in Carnegie Hall. >> She could've saved it for the encyclopedia. The fandom is patient.

Whether or not somebody's orientation is mentioned in a book, people will make it up for them. :/ However, I agree with your observation about people jumping on homosexual characters and not paying any other attention to them than that.

I'll bet if she had brought up his sexuality earlier on, people would find a way to interpret all of his interactions with Harry as him being a dirty pedophile or something. DUMBLEDORE IS NOT OROCHIMARU KTHX.
