So agreed on this. Although, Gibbs and Tony are both my least favorites. But Tony is slightly better than Gibbs. I wouldn't find Gibbs so annoying if he wasn't so worshipped by the other characters. He isn't perfect, he does plenty wrong, but everything he does is justified on the show. I hate it. He's the reason I stopped watching.

Then again, I don't want Tony and Ziva either because while Tony deserves better than Gibbs, Ziva deserves better than Tony.

I watch it and think that McGee is pretty much the only half-way competent member of their entire team. Put him in charge, certainly promote him over Captain Jackass with the smarmy smile.

I think one of the writers said that Tony was a younger Gibbs and McGee a younger Vance. That's my headcanon now, and I want to write a fic where McGee gets director over Tony.

MW has also said that Tony shouldn't grow up, because once he does, he'll realize he can do better and he'll leave.

Yeah, half my problem with these characters is that they learn a lesson and then we never see that lesson change them or see them apply that lesson.

The problem with Gibbs is that the show consistently tells us that he is perfect, or as close to it as a person can get. And that's really boring.

Abby, McGee, and Ziva are much more interesting. And Palmer. Can't forget Palmer.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Palmer is beyond adorable. I love his friendship with Ducky.

From my brief time reading Tony/Gibbs fic you've pretty much hit on exactly why people do ship it. Some people really dig the parent-child type of relationship. Not my thing, but I gotta admit it's pretty in-character for these two idiots.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still bitter and angry because they simply destroyed Tonys and Gibbs characters in later seasons. In the first seasons their were so amazing. *a former Tibbs shipper*

The problem with NCIS is the sitcom problem where the show has gone on a loooong time with no end in sight, so they're hesitant to let anyone change too much lest that make people stop watching. Hence the 'lessons learned don't actually do anything' aspect.

NCIS is one of those 'do as I say not as I do' shows for me...aka the way Gibbs is DESCRIBED is often different from how he is SHOWN, especially in later years as they've become more and more charicatured. My approach to canon in NCIS is fairly lackadaisical.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have only ever really watched this show for Ducky (David McCallum fan from his Man from U.N.C.L.E. days), Abby, Tim, and now Palmer. I loved Kate, and still hate that she's not around any more. I could be just as thrilled if Gibbs and Tony disappeared, and was kind of hoping with this season, one of them might die.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha. I don't know much about NCIS, but I have this one other childhood friend who's still writing fanfic and this, this is her baby, her one and only true fandom for the last... 8 years? She's a Tibbs shipper. This just reminded me of all the times she would tell me about her awesome OTP and their dynamics for hours on end back in the beginning. So, no real substance in my comment, but your secret has me giggling OP, thanks.

Almost every person in the team is terrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
THIS SECRET IS GIVING ME LIFE! TY OP!

(Agreed on all fronts, but I still read the pairing sometimes when I'm desperate. I prefer Tony/McGee, where Tony is borderline emotionally abusive but true love happens anyway. Because I'm broken. Recs?)

I'm only a casual watcher of this show, and I've enjoyed it from time to time, but I don't see how Mark Harmon is supposed to be such a bad-ass. IMO his hairstyle is silly-looking and I'm just not getting this tough-guy persona that the character supposedly has.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Agreed. I watch and (mostly) enjoy the show, but I stay far far away from fandom. I don't ship anyone on the show. I don't like Tiva, and Tibbs and Gabby both creep me out for the reasons you've described here. Add to that the defensive Tony fans who are always complaining about him not getting treated with the respect he deserves (really?) and the Tiva fandom meltdown this summer when Cote de Pablo left that could practically be seen from space......yeah. FAR FAR away.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, the Tiva meltdown was hilarious. So fun to watch. The only thing I kinda ship on this show is McGee/Ziva. Tony doesn't deserve any respect imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
The defensive Tony fans crack me up. I can buy super-competent Tony, but imo he gets exactly as much respect as he wants...he's an undercover cop from way back and he's got some personal issues as well; as far as I can tell being underestimated is his favorite strategy. And sincerity gives him hives, so if Gibbs was constantly praising him instead of headslapping on occasion, or if McGee said admiring things instead of bickering, it would drive him NUTS.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
This... is really insightful. Headcanon accepted.

I have a really hard time shipping Gibbs with anyone at all. I think his capacity for romantic relationships died with his first wife. And I have an even harder time shipping him with Tony because I don't see any subtext for the pairing at all.

Tony is someone I love watching on TV but who I would never want to hang out with in real life.
