OP, read the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce. It's more YA than GoT, especially the first two books, but the last two are fucking fantastic and the protagonist is very Brienne-esque. In fact, read all of Pierce's Tortall books. Awesome female protagonists who are interesting and flawed but GOOD. Ugh. I love them so much.

Ooo, I loved this series as a teen. I'm not actually sure I ever finished them; I think the library was missing a couple of the books and I never tracked them down. Thank you for the reminder!
