They have different genders but they have the same background and made mostly the same choices. However, I interpreted them so differently due to the various motivations I assumed they had that was exclusive to them. That's me interpreting the character differently from others and making him/her my own. I've seen a lot of people do this.

Exactly. I agree with the limitations bit too, but there's certainly room for variety.

Yeah, maybe the difference between the two groups who think Shepard is a defined character and those who don't is that we have a different view of those limitations? Maybe some view the limitations and then say, "Yup, that's the character" And others view the limitations as, "So this is where I can start my character."

So maybe it's less about not agreeing with each other about those set limitations existing and more about how those limitations are viewed to define the character?

...Am I making sense?

Makes sense to me! A paragon and renegade Shepard can be quite different people, as two paragons can be, per your example. If I'm wrong in thinking that...uh, whatever. Guess it's good I don't write fanfic. *shrugs*
