I hate the phrase "drinking the kool-aid." Because comparing someone's political beliefs to a mass suicide is awful. It's also never used intelligently in a conversation. Instead of actually discussing and arguing, people just pull this phrase out when they want to sound smart and put the other person down.

Yay, rant threads!

Uggggh, I hate phrases like that so much; the ones that reduce their side of a debate to overused one liners.

Plus, it was Flavor Aid! Not Kool-Aid.

But yes, i don't like that, either.

I had no idea there was that kind of context to the phrase DDDD:

/is not from the USA
/learned something new

+1 on the confused train of "how do you even use that phrase?"

Same here D:

Another not-american anon who is now confused.

It's a reference to the Jonestown massacre. In 1978, 900 members of a cult called the People's Temple committed suicide in Jonestown, Guyana by drinking poisoned Koolaid. That's where the phrase comes from - "Don't drink the Koolaid", don't buy into the lies, don't listen to someone just because they're charismatic.

It's more complicated than even that because the Jonestown incident was apparently a murder-suicide. Some people were involuntarily injected, including infants.

Well, that's one thing I could've gone without knowing.

Damn.

I'm sorry nonny. :(

In addition, just prior to the murder-suicides, cult members attacked a Congressional delegation whose visit was apparently the trigger for the suicide, killing 5, including Congressman Leo Ryan. My current Representative was actually there as an aide to Ryan and was injured in the attacks.

So yeah, it was definitely not just a mass suicide.

Meh, it's just shorthand for "subscribing to an irrational belief because a bunch of other people have put it forth as Gospel truth, when it is in fact hogwash." I don't read any more into it than that.

+1 that's definitely what it has come to mean! Apropos of nothing, this is also how I refer to the current leadership in my own church. (No compound in Africa though. Yet.)
