Old gaming consoles....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-11-17 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My daughter really wants a Nintendo 64 (and a couple of Zelda games) for Xmas, but i don't have any real clue how you go about making sure an old, used console is and will work well. Any tips?

Some specialty video game shops will let you try out it before you buy it.

Ah. Well, we have one game shop here, it's pretty small.... I'll have to see what they have. (Really can't justify driving two hours to the bigger cities for game console testing....)

Thanks!

I don't really think there's a guarantee, just make sure you buy it from a good source.

If you have a store in your area that you can go to that buys/sells old games and consoles that'd be best. Most have a really great return policy and always seem to be really friendly and helpful.

oooh, that would be such a great gift, I hope you can find one!

I was lucky and came upon an N64 for free because my cousin got tired of having his and gave it to me. I have both Zelda games, too.

There are definitely game stores that will sell you those. See if you can test it out (and the games too) before buying, or if they have a return policy, etc. They're not terribly expensive ime.

We've only got one gamer-type store in the area that would have such a thing, so i'll have to see what they've got.

Thanks!

I would sell you my N64 but it doesn't work well and I'm trying to fix it up so I can play my old games.

Best of luck finding one.

My experiences with second-hand consoles have taught me that if I buy from an individual, it's going to break down within a few months. The only ones I trust now are refurbished from GAME (and the refurbished Wii I bought there also broke down, but they were good about replacing it).

If she wants a N64 specifically to play Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, then an alternative might be to get a GameCube with the Zelda Collector's Edition (which contains both those games). Slightly newer console, so you might have more luck finding one in good condition.

Is GAME a website?

I have no clue about game consoles, heh, so research is in order.
Thanks!

It's a big chain of stores in the UK. I don't know if it exists in other countries though, so er, that's probably not very helpful to you.

Anyway! Good luck in your research, and may I say that your daughter has excellent taste in games.

Ah, yeah, no. Heh.
Thanks, though! :)

Heee - she's loved that ever since my dad would play all the time.

Chiming in, that you can also buy Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time through the Wii shop (you need a credit card to buy them or a Wii points card you can buy at gaming shops). They are digital purchases that stay on the Wii system.

The Wii also has LOZ: Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess.

I don't have any specific advice other than make sure to shop around. Zelda games for the older consoles can get crazy expensive, depending on where you're shopping. I think you can probably find OoT for around $30-50 but I know some shops try and charge $100+ by calling it a "collectors item".

Huh. The ones i've seen on ebay were a lot cheaper than that. I'll have to make sure they're what i think they are, then - who knows, maybe i'm looking at the wrong thing.

Thanks!

Same anon, and I just went to Amazon and yeah, the price has gone way down since the last time I was shopping around. Good news for you!

But I did notice a few were only selling the box (why, I don't know) so double check for that!

WTH. Why in the world would they sell the *box*. Weird.

Re: Old gaming consoles....

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
On the off-chance that someone will not look closely enough, and buy just the box at the price of the actual game.

Just a little bit of scamming.

It's also a collector thing. Boxes improve the resale value.

Re: Old gaming consoles....

I bought one for myself about 6 years ago and many of my friends and family have since bought one after visiting my house. We've all had very good luck with buying from third party sellers on amazon. Just read the seller's description carefully, ignore the ones that use it as an ad for their store, and stick with the ones that have 97% approval and higher.

I haven't had as good luck for buying controllers. The ones I got with the system were great but they got lost in a move last year (they're probably around here somewhere still) and I went through hell buying replacements. I ordered two from one seller and both were the wrong color and one didn't work. They delayed refunding my money and when I reported them to amazon they said they didn't issue a refund because they had sent a replacement order. I told amazon I wanted my refund because I was returning the order because it was wrong, I wasn't exchanging it. They had a shipping number so amazon couldn't enforce the refund. Then I got a charge on my account for the shipping like a week later but the shipping number said the package hadn't been delivered to the carrier still. A few weeks after that I got the same two controllers in the mail. I reported them to amazon again and demanded a full refund to include the shipping charges against my account. That doesn't include the cost of me sending the controllers back both times because amazon's TOS don't force third party sellers to pay for that. In response, amazon issued me a shipping label for free to send them back and then gave me a gift card to compensate for the first time I sent the controllers back. I ordered controllers from someone else after that and one of those was the wrong color but both worked and I just didn't have the energy to deal with it after that so I kept them and just gave mixed feedback about the seller. I've since heard you can go to any GameStop or even just their website and have them find working N64 controllers for you in whatever color you want and have them shipped to your local store or your house. I don't know how expensive that is but if I ever need to replace the controllers again I'm going through GameStop because I don't need the hassle. I'd give you the bad seller's name as a warning but their store is closed on amazon now.
