Re: Badass female fictional characters

To talk about a couple characters from things that nobody else but me cares about, Marian Halcombe from The Woman In White, and Martina Zorilla from the webcomic Spacetrawler.

Martina in particular is someone who is great because the main reason that she's badass is because she's just really, really committed to her principles. She's basically a pretty normal person in most ways, just one who really cares about people and tries really, really hard to do the right thing, and in the course of doing so, turns into a total badass.

Marian! She was the best part of that book, no lie.

She absolutely was! She's such a fantastic character. She was one of the only reasons I really finished that book tbh - her and Count Fosco, who's a really good villain.

It's funny - the main female and male leads, and the main villain, are just kind of weedy and blah, and then you have these supporting characters in the background who are just fantastic.

There's a lot of evidence that people thought that at the time. Edward Fitzgerald (the poet) named a boat after her, and apparently Collins was inundated by proposals from men who assumed that he was basing her off a real person. Oh Victorian fandom, so batshit - and yet, it's kind of reassuring that Marion got the love from readers she deserved even then, even if some of them were completely mad...
