This is kind of a late response, sorry! I don't know if you'll even read this.
I was judging Levi a bit harshly, because you're right, he has exercised understanding and been a mentor figure for Eren. What I more meant by Levi being dismissive of Eren is that Levi is the type to praise or acknowledge soldiers, something which he noticeably hasn't done for Eren. When discussing Eren with others, such as with Mikasa, or in the latest chapter, he instead puts Eren down, and likes to point out his flaws. Nothing he's said shows a willingness to believe in Eren's skills, or acknowledge any good qualities that Eren has displayed. This is a stark contrast to Armin or Mikasa (and even on some level, other members of the 104th) who know Eren well and are much more willing to believe in him. This doesn't make Levi worse than the other Survey officers, but it also doesn't show that he cares for or acknowledges Levi any more than they do either.

But yes, by putting in his backing of Eren it does mean Levi is willing on some level to have faith in Eren, as well as the Survey Corps/Erwin for making the gamble to trust Eren. And in the situations like the forest, or when Eren grew the arm, it does show that Levi is willing to trust Eren. But I feel like Levi made the gamble to trust Eren, not because he cares about Eren the person and wanted to believe in him, but because putting his trust in Eren was really all he could do. Levi essentially has no way to control Eren; Eren can transform into a titan at any given time he wants- he's essentially a dangerous weapon far beyond the power of the Survey Corps. The only thing they could do is attempt to take him down and kill him, which would be a worst case scenario. Being fair and willing to put trust in him is really all Levi can do. It's also worth noting that Levi wasn't the one who made the choice to place Eren in the Survey Corps. And he was the one assigned to watching Eren, not likely because he wanted to, but because he's the one in the Corps who's the most capable of doing it.
I just don't see enough proof that shows Levi that has grown to care about Eren, the person. And I do agree that Levi is willing to give advice to, and watch out for Eren, in that Levi is a reasonable leader, and not a heartless guy, and will do that for the soldiers under his watch. But again, I just don't see any evidence that Levi really cares for Eren outside of that context. Or that he is willing to trust Eren like he does his other soldiers and comrades.

Essentially this is something we're just going to have to agree to disagree on! So far there's really no concrete proof to prove that either of us are right. And, again, this isn't me trying to put down the Levi/Eren ship. I myself ship all kinds of crazy, noncanon Shingeki couples with even less canon backing than Levi/Eren. And this also isn't me trying to villify Levi, I love his character- although I do tend to lean towards interpretations of him in which he's more flawed. I just personally feel that there's been nothing in canon that has shown that Levi cares specifically about Eren, or that they've yet formed any kind of bond.

Not sure if you'll see it, but-

You're being very fair, and I def see what you're saying. It's a valid interpretation. My only argument is that Levi was the one who first showed interest in Eren, and asked to take responsibility for him, when he was first imprisoned. So Eren's not a completely unwanted burden.

But I accept your other points, I just did see him as closer to Eren. Like you said, agree to disagree :)

Thanks for taking the time to comment! It's seriously one of the first civil conversations about the ship I've had with a non-shipper. It was interesting to hear your perspective, and I do agree with a lot of you points.

I know you probably won't see this now, but I didn't know you replied to me!
It's also one of the most civil conversations I've had over a ship. Thank you for being so open minded and nice. You're also the first Levi/Eren shipper to make me see why people ship it (other than the fact that it's makes for some very nice fanart).

haha, I actually ended up checking the post again, so I did see your comment :)

I know the ship has a bad rep, and tbh I don't get along with most of the other shippers too... But at least now you'll have the memory of That One Shipper who's decent :P
