They're sleeping gas'd on a field trip. It's definitely a commentary about obedience and authority, but also how about how harsh and dehumanizing Japanese society can be, I think (especially the educational system) (I'm probably phrasing that in a shitty way but I hope you know what I mean)

Well I figured it had something to do with the educational system, since some universities - as opposed to taking the top scorers from everywhere - will take a certain allotment from certain schools. And even in just good high schools the competition can be fierce - if you've ever watched Fushigi Yuugi, there's one scene where Miaka's mother bitches her daughter out for encouraging her best friend to apply to the same school, because if that friend does well it's one spot taken and thus less of a chance she'll get in.

Hence, 15-year-olds killing themselves for not getting into the high school of their choice (better high school = higher allotment for good colleges = better career prospects).
