It's an outdated term - some of behaviours the 19th century would call monomania might now be considered part of obsessive compulsive disorder or bipolar disorder.

Yup. A lot of 19th century "conditions" were actually vaguely delineated categories of observed behavior that could be caused by a range of wildly different sources. Hard to really blame doctors back then too much, as they didn't really have much information to go on apart from the behavior they saw.
