Copyright law doesn't really stop you from getting the profit, but taking profit does give the copyright holder an amount to sue you for (triple your profits, in certain cases). So more than anything, it's pasting a target on your back.

It also gives them reason to go after you. There are a lot of copyright holders out there who actively tolerate, or even enjoy, fanworks...just so long as you don't try to make a profit from it.
