Re: I think she's a lot smarter than anyone is giving her credit for...

So this is all about money? We shouldn't criticize public figures if they manage to succeed at getting rich and famous through crass behaviors, even if it's at the expense of other people legitimately trying to make it in the industry and running into huge walls of rejection due to their images not meeting the expectations of the execs and the fans. Since the 'profession' is currently all about being packaged and meaninglessly provocative, we should be content with that and cheer on the people who exemplify these oh-so-desired qualities? Asking for "more" is now apparently a ridiculous expectation, even though we have seen that this industry could be more?

I think a lot of people, if not all, are perfectly aware that Miley is just giving the industry exactly what it asks for. She's doing a great job. It's just that the job description is shit. You say "Cyrus is acting like a professional in an industry where ridiculousness and infamy are the dominant social currency" but for some reason that sentence doesn't end with "and that's a situation that should warrant criticism". Like it's a good thing the industry is like that and warps women's images so we're further seen as infantile sex objects. If your job is illegally dumping toxic waste for factories, and you do it so very well and earn tons of money, I suppose you can sleep soundly at night.

I kind of assumed that was obvious and didn't need to be stated.

The music industry is pretty fucked up and we all know it. But I wasn't really talking about the music industry at large, just one person in it. I think Cyrus gets subjected to a lot of vitriol that she doesn't deserve - not in the "she's so nice, who cares about this other stuff?" way, but in a "most of the implications about her are misleading or flat-out wrong" way.

She gets lumped in with other former child stars like Lindsay Lohan and accused of trying and failing to act like Lady Gaga, one known for instability and the other for unpredictability...then they get all surprised when instead of being a wreck or a nutjob, she's a professional.

Does it suck that being a professional means basically laying herself open to an industry and public who want to vivisect her and her sexuality for their own profit and amusement? Absolutely. And maybe she could be doing more, or maybe she's just a lot more stuck where she is, who knows - like I said, the music industry is fucked up, and they get away with that due to ridiculous contracts and legal bindings, ones that have a reputation for being especially exploitative of performers for a reason.

But when people try to claim she's turning into another car crash of a former child star, a celebrity wreck, or is otherwise losing her shit and becoming a hot mess, then I have to shake my head and say, "yeah, no" because she isn't - she's behaving professionally for her industry, and playing the business like a damn fiddle.

I applaud her for keeping her head level in an environment that seeks to relentlessly rip her apart and tear her down. It sucks that the music industry is like that, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms altogether.
