Most big name movies come from America. It's just a fact of globalization--media is what the U.S. does. So when people say they want more open representation of anything in movies, they almost certainly mean American movies.

Most Indians would disagree. They have their own movie industry, even big enough to dominate the region. Nonny who spent most of her time in Thailand watching Indian television dramas and movies.

Alright then. Top grossing films from India, what are they?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Simply not true.

The grosses beg to differ. Here:

Now, tell me at what point you reach a non-American movie. First I saw was Skyfall, which is British-made, at #8. Next is Quantum of Solace, another Bond movie, at #87. Third is Slumdog Millionaire, which is also British made, at #195.

We can keep going if you want, but when I say most, I do mean most. Even the Harry Potter movies come from a U.S. company (well, half.)

You're talking grosses, but there are plenty of movies that are big-name outside of the US, without having made as much money as Hollywood blockbusters. Bollywood is the world's biggest film industry, and has made plenty of films that its audiences would consider to be "big-name". Nollywood is one of the largest film industries in terms of output, but utilises different distribution methods (video, DVD, VCD, video parlours) and thus makes far less money. Egypt has a flourishing cinema with a very long history that is wildly popular in the Middle East. All of these film industries have produced plenty of films that are big-name with their audiences, even if they haven't made as much money as Hollywood blockbusters.
