Re: Should I have a baby?

haha I'm totally the opposite. The producing a baby part totally fascinates me. My body can do that??? WHoa! What's it like?? That's amazing!! etc. Even the gross uncomfortable bits. the truly horrifying part to me is raising the child. Not really the beginning parts - I could get through babyhood, I can deal with toddlerhood - it's the slightly older and (oh god) teenage part that scares the shit out of me. So much is out of your control, so much can go wrong, you can be the best parent ever and your kid can still suffer at the hands of others or themselves or be horrible a person and what then???

And you're locked in forever!! No escape!

Read: control and commitment issues. But pregnancy? Sounds cool.

I don't know much about this, but maybe you could be a surrogate?

I've thought about it. My feeling is that it would be something that should work, on paper, but I don't know if I'd actually be strong enough to go through with it/willing to put myself at risk like that.

AYRT

We really are opposites, because the part of having a kid that fascinates me kicks in right around when you start getting freaked out by it -- when the kid starts having thoughts and being able to articulate them. The idea of getting to help shape and guide the development of a whole other person, and giving them experiences and memories and skills and values that they will (hopefully) treasure for the rest of their lives just seems really awesome to me. If I could just skip over the part where the kid is oozing from every orifice 24/7 and jump to the part where they're asking questions about the world, that would be awesome.

Clearly the solution is that you and I should have a baby together. I'll deal with the pregnancy and the first few years, you get the rest! Flawless plan, right? What could go wrong?
