People have had shitty handwriting for ages, but in the US at least, penmanship was taught in schools up until maybe the 1970s. This included cursive handwriting, which as far as I know, nobody learns anymore.

I learned cursive and hated every minute of it. It's supposed to be faster to write than print and be easier to read. I can print quite nicely if I try, and if I don't try I can churn out words that I only can read really quickly (perfect for rough drafts).
If I try to do cursive, I have to slow way down and the result is just a bunch of illegible scraggly loops anyway.

Cursive is supposed to be faster than print? Since when? It takes me so much longer to write in cursive

That's what I was told when I used to kick up a fuss about having to learn it. They said, "It's faster, easier, and more legible than print. You'll thank us later". They lied on all four counts.

True, though I personally don't think cursive has much practical use. *shrug*

Cursive was still taught in my elementary school in the 1990s, albeit briefly.

I learned enough to pass, then promptly forgot everything by how to sign my own name, and printed/typed every single assignment thereafter. Which teachers loved, because they could read them.

Different country here, and the thought of not learning cursive at school is completely alien to me. I think there's some discussion about not teaching it anymore, but I don't think that'll happen too soon.
We all learn it, but in the end, everyone writes differently anyway. Most use a combination of cursive and print, I think.
