Seriously, he's not only homophobic but frequently raps about beating, raping and killing women, including his own mother and ex. What is wrong with you?

OP

When he's in his Slim Shady identity, he plays the role of a horrible person. That doesn't mean he actually believes the crap that comes out of his mouth. One of his best songs, Stan, can be interpreted as being about what happens when people take him seriously, and why it's important to recognize that he--and many other entertainers--is just playing a part.

If you're willing to acknowledge that Eminem is playing a part, why is it an insurmountable obstacle when other rappers play their own parts and take on their own personas? Specifically, given your objection in the OP - why can't you just treat millionaire rappers talking about keeping it real as people playing a part, the same way that you think about the Slim Shady persona?

Like, do you see what I'm getting at here?

Because Slim Shady is funny and playful. He boasts and exaggerates so much it wraps around and becomes cartoonish, and he lets off some perfect one-liners.

Actually, that may be more of my issue with rap--when I try clicking on the recommended links on Youtube for other rappers, I always wind up hearing all this stuff that sounds way too serious. Either it's really swaggery, but doesn't do anything to deflate that swagger, or it's really hateful, but takes no opportunity to mock its own hate. (I may have bashed Lupe Fiasco in the secret, but at least he knows when to lighten up a little.)

Well, at least you've been able to clarify the issue you have with rap! Hopefully that'll allow you to find some stuff that you're into.

Unfortunately, I don't really have any recommendations, because mostly the stuff I like is very, very serious (if at least a little more laid back or contemplative). But good luck!
