My brother's dog died

So my brother's dog got eaten by coyotes. The only things they left were her jacket, a small piece of bone, and part of an organ. She was in the backyard with walls about 5 1/2 feet tall, so it was surprising because I thought coyotes couldn't jump that high. It happened between 1-2am, when previously she was let out very late at night (like about 3:30 am) several months ago when my brother still lived here with me and my parents because he had work early in the morning.

I know it's not my fault, it was a freak accident and just so unfortunate, but I can't help but think that I could have done something different. I only started letting her out so late a couple nights ago because she peed in the hallway right in front of me. I just feel so bad because she died in such a horrible way, she was annoying sometimes and I couldn't wait for my brother and sister-in-law to move to a house so I could give her back, but I didn't want her to go like this.

That really sucks but it doesn't sound like you could have done much. You were unlucky to have let her out when a coyote was passing by :/

I'm pretty sure coyotes could easily jump over any size fence you care to construct. Coyotes are fucking crazy. A kid in my neighborhood once got a terrier that had to become an inside dog after it got mauled by coyotes twice. They probably would have come around and attacked no matter what time of night you let the dog out, so don't feel bad about changing the routine.
