Add in the fact that almost all of the trans headcanons I've seen are based on gender stereotypes (i.e. "he dresses like a girl, therefore he must be a girl!"), and yeah, it's offensive.

This. This is what I see too often. Trans headcanons done right? Awesome. People looking at a female character who is "too muscled/tough/strong/etc" and deciding she's trans, or a male character who is "sensitive/soft/interested in girly hobbies/gay" and decided he's trans.

I've seen it all. Headcanons that have NO root in gender stereotypes and are just neat (like Sherlock, I've liked some of his transfic)... but then I see it all the time for gay characters that are "girly" so clearly they must literally have a vagina. Which I think is just offensive as all fuck and speaks to a lot of misogyny.
