Re: Old skills
(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)2. I have a few phone numbers memorised. But especially considering that some of my friends keep changing theirs and cellphone numbers are a pain to memorise, I don't bother. But I probably could, if I wanted. It's a matter of actively dialing the numbers, actually. If you do that a lot, you will memorise the numbers automatically after a while. If you have everyone in your contact list? Not so much.
3. People don't know how to use a phonebook?
4. I could change a tire and I do all the basic stuff. Doesn't mean I like doing it. But if you own a car, you should be able to make sure it doesn't die on you over simple maintainance stuff like too little oil or coolant.
5. I don't like fussing with electric cables and stuff (almost being hit by lightning makes you wary of electricity) and I have never needed to fix a complete sink, but I'm pretty sure that I could look instructions up on the internet and do most things myself if I had to. A thing that a lot of older people still can't.
6. I love maps and I like being the one to read the map and give out directions. I still love my navigation device because it's a pain when you're alone in the car and always have to stop and fold out the map, look stuff up and drive on if you're lost.
7. I don't know many knots because I have never needed them. I know how to tie a knot for climbing gear. Given the instructions and practice, I could probably tie other knots as well. I actually doubt that every old person knew more than a small number of knots they used on a regular basis.
8. I could write a check, but nobody does that anymore where I live. So whatever. Most older people can't do online banking.
9. I know how to sew in theory but I'm afraid of sewing machines. Hand stitching stuff is no problem.
10. I don't know how to shoot animals because you're not allowed to own guns or go hunting in my country without several licences. I have a very well growing mini herb garden.
11. I don't do parties, with or withour a phone. Nobody of my actual friends always fusses with their phones when we're together. But yeah, it's pretty stupid how a lot of people would rather blog about the food on their table instead of talking about it with the person they're eating with.
12. I actually think that people are very creative today, fandom culture and all. I write, I draw/paint and lots of other ~creative~ stuff.
13. My whole year took "proper" standard dancing lessons in the final term of school. I always thought that standard dance looks stupid and I'm not sad that I can't dance like that.
