if you felt like you had a lot going for you with work, hobbies, friends, interests, etc. would you perhaps feel less like you "needed" a boyfriend to prove something to other people?

I do have those things, but it's not the same as having a boyfriend (or husband and kids).

Honestly, that's exactly the kind of thing that I'm worried people assume, that because I don't have a boyfriend I also don't have a life of any kind.
