Note on the figure of 8.3% quoted itt -

8.3% of characters in UK drama were black or asian in 2009. For continuing drama the figure was 18.1%. GLAADs 2012 figures for US primetime was 12% African-American and 4.7% Asian. In 2011 the Beeb's continuing drama figures were around 25%.

Basically - the UK definitely isn't brilliant when it comes to casting POC, but we're not as bad as is made out! E.g. Here's crime drama for last year - http://www.crimetimepreview.com/2011/10/new-tv-crime-dramas-2012.html Most shows set in the present day will have a poc in the main cast.

But on the downside there is our total obsession with period settings across all genres, which limits the potential for casting poc. Then you have area which will always struggle with poc casting, like Scots Gaelic and Welsh programming. (The pool of speakers is just really limited: 1.2% of the population of Scotland and 19% of the population of Wales respectively.)
