Maybe it's because you missed the first half of the movie, you didn't see him in his pirate get up?

I'm confused at what point this secret is trying to make.

It gets blatantly pointed out in the first half that "hey audience, this guy thinks he's a pirate", but he's constantly in his pirate get up, saying pirate-y things, for the entire movie.

OP said they didn't see him in the pirate get up. They missed the first half, so they didn't know about it until it was mentioned in a later scene.

What sootyowl doesn't get is why that's a secret. Usually when you come into a movie halfway through, you don't know about details that you missed. It's very normal.
