I was going to ask in the secret thread (#12) but I have no idea if my question is going to start wank and it's less likely to on the second page if it is.

In the His Dark Materials book series, everyone has a sort of guardian spirit, called a daemon, that takes the shape of an animal that suits their personality. So OP's talking about daemons that are dogs.

I His Dark Materials a person's soul is a somewhat separate entity that settles on a particular animal form during puberty. The form of the daemon represents something major about the person's personality. An adventurer has a big cat; servants have dogs because they represent loyalty, etc.

The book series His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman involves the concept of multiple universes. In one of the universes -- the one in which the main character of the series comes from -- every person has a "daemon," a part of their soul that is outside of their body and takes the form of an animal. In childhood, the daemon can shift forms, changing from one animal to another readily, but as the person grows up, their daemon "settles" into a single shape, one that reflects their personality in some way.

A daemon is an outside representation/manifestation of your soul in His Dark Materials books. They are animals that can shift shape until puberty when they pick one animal form to stay in and it is supposed to reflect or represent something about their person.

They're from the book series His Dark Materials. Golden Compass is the first one and is a movie you may have heard of.

Basically each person has a physical animal or daemon that's always with them that represents their soul. These animals can talk to the person and they're seen by everyone. The constantly change form when the person is a child and finally "decide" on a permanent shape as an adult. The animal reflects the kind of person they are.
