Two teams take turns trying to score the most runs. Runs are scored by hitting the baseball, which is thrown by the opposing team.

After the ball is hit, the batter must run to all four bases (in order) to score a run. It must be hit within the white lines to be considered fair. While on these bases, the runner is safe.

If the ball is caught in the air or reaches a base before the runner does, he is "out" and must leave. Runners may not pass one another.

In the case the ball leaves the field, it is considered a home run, and the batter gets to run all the bases and score a run.

Each team has three outs before the other team can bat themselves. This change is done nine times. At the end of the nine innings, the team with the most runs wins.

Chasing small balls should never be that complicated. I still don't get most of if, but I think I get the base metaphors people use for dating now.

Thank you :D

OH! The bases are because each base up (1st, 2nd, 3rd) gets you closer to a homerun. Homeruns = scoring.

The idea is that home plate = sex (specifically PIV for most people using the system), and the other bases represent things like oral, handjobs, making out...that might be it, or it might be oral/handjob, making out, cuddling, in order from 3rd to 1st. I always thought it was pretty dumb and all about using your sex life for social status which is silly, so I haven't payed that much attention to the rules of the metaphor.

Oh I didn't know people used it for social status and things. I've basically never come across the whole base thing in fiction, never in real life. I always thought it was used as a general guide to relationships or something.

When I was in middle/high school (morese middle as I remember) it was kind of a social thing that I didn't pay a lot of attention to. Not overt, like, "you're not ~cool~ because you've never been to third base!" or whatever but the kind of thing kids/teens hold up as a way of showing off and preening, like so many other things they do.
