I was really let down by their relationship. I didn't read it as strong or as positive as the rest of fandom did. :T

A lot of that positivity is fanon, not canon. They both were brilliant scientists, but they didn't exactly respect each other or each other's ideas until they had to absolutely work together to save the world.

For real; I read it as borderline-hostility for the first 2/3 of the movie. To me they did not act like friends in any capacity until they drifted.

and it was even worse when it turned out his wife's job is as a model. :( Basically sexism all around. Actually, for a giant fanbase on tumblr it has a surprisingly "loud" portion of sexists and racists in the fandom :/ They get told off a lot, but it doesn't stop them. On the flip side, the SJW's in the fandom are also rather batshit. Hopefully it will settledown in time

My first impression was "fighting like a married couple" then as the movie went on it did seem kind of like they honestly disliked each other, but I caught a bit in their drift. Maybe I misinterpreted it, but I got the impression Hermann never really had anyone who understood him until Newt, and since most of the memories after that were seemingly positive ones of the two of them interacting, I thought they at least had some affection for each other.

Personally I'm a sucker for those pairings in which one character is "the only one able to/allowed to [whatever]" but a platonic relationship like what I got from the flashbacks is equally sweet.
