Re: Sentinal/Guide

NAYRT

The Sentinel fandom also look these basic elements from the show and ran with it in fanon. So the idea that Sentinels/Guides have a soulmate bond, or a sexual bond is all fanon, as well as little things like the Sentinel being able to sense where his Guide is at all times or make out his heartbeat from across the room. (Other Sentinels going instinct-driven caveman macho and fighting over Guides is surprisingly canon, though.)

Also, in the show, no one really knows about Sentinels except Jim, the show's Sentinel and a cop, and Blair, his Guide who meets him because he's doing a doctoral thesis on Sentinels and needs a subject to study. One of the recurring issues of the show is how it would affect Jim's career if he was found out. In contrast in the fandom one of the most popular subgenres of fic became 'Sentinels are Known' stories, where the government regulates Sentinel and Guide bonds. A lot of these fics created a legally unequal relationship between Sentinels and Guides eg Guides having restricted legal rights or becoming the 'property' of their Sentinel. Or, less commonly, they just create a situation where Jim and Blair are forced to work together against their will because they are compatible matches, and romantic comedy ensues.

I mention the above fanon because a lot of the Sentinel/Guide AUs for other fandoms I've seen are 'Sentinels are Known' flavour AUs. I imagine that could be a bit confusing if you look up the original show and don't recognise anything because the whole thing is based on long-estrablished fanon tropes.

On a side note, I feel like 'Sentinels are Known' unequal-power-dynamics AUs were one of the precursors to monster that is now the A/B/O AU - once you add the fanon 'Guides are lower caste' to 'Sentinels and Guides have an intrinsic sexual bond' to 'If Sentinels and Guides don't consummate their bond bad things happen', the parallels are pretty compelling.

Sorry for the essay. I hope it explains a few things!

Thank you very much! I wondered where all that extra stuff came from. I guess it was just all fanon. : /

Anon from the first comment here. You said it better than I could.

I also thought about the A/B/O parallels, especially with the basic wildness added in fanon to the relationship between Sentinel and Guide (especially if you read some of the more... violent depictions of the relationships, in regards to feelings of ownership and power between Sentinel and Guide). I think back in the day there even where some spirit animal transformation/mating tropes...
