Errr, not exactly. The catcher has to tag out the batter but only if he drops strike 3. So if the batter swing and misses on strike 3, but the catcher can't hang on to it, the batter can run to first and be safe - but it's still considered a strike-out on the pitcher's stats.

It's still really rare, because the catchers don't drop that many strike 3s, and if they do it's usually really easy to tag the guy out. But it does raise the possibility of someone striking out 4 batters via having one of them reach base.

I don't think there's any real reason for this rules-wise - just one of those weird hangovers from protobaseball, or something.

Okay, yeah, that's much clearer. I'm deleting to prevent further misinformation. I love this sport but it is seriously overcomplicated!

But the bizarre and overcomplicated rules are one of the best things about the sport! Seriously, I love that stuff. All the obscure rules situations and old-fasioned anachronisms. The quirks, basically. That's part of what makes the sport so lovable.

Baseball is like LOST- there's probably a reason somewhere, but headscratching is also part of the fun.
