Someone I know wrote a book that desperately needed editing but the author wouldn't even tolerate it. They went the self-publishing route because it didn't take .6 minutes to get approved by a regular publishing house, and such the manuscript was released with so many glaring errors that they had to release a new one after someone half-heartedly edited it. It's still a mess.

Self-publishing is for people who are impatient.

I disagree.

You seem to be making that judgement on one person. By your same logic I could look to people who publish YA Twilight knockoffs in traditionl publishing and say that it's only for sellouts. But that would be flawed because there are also very good books to get published.

Seriously? You're going to make a sweeping judgment about an entire industry based on the ONE person you know who did this? It's true that some people are impatient and don't want to go through the vetting process of traditional publishing, but it's ridiculous to say that everyone feels this way.
