I don't think that's uncommon at all, OP. My husband is a legit makes-his-living-from-art artist, and uses reference photos all the time.

No idea what fandom this is, but the guy on the left reminds me of Hank from Breaking Bad.

That's Guido and Monet, Marvel comics mutants. Specifically from a title called X-Factor.

Guido

Really? Really comics, we're really using racial slurs instead of names now? Are we actually regressing back into the days of Nigger Jim?

Fuck you marvel

...Guido is a name.

It is an actual name, both Italian and German.

Are Irish guys called Michael not allowed to go by the nickname "Mick" in your world too?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

I think using reference pics is fine and pretty common. As long as their just a reference and you're not tracing them or something.

No dude, this is an awesome thing to do. I'd like to try it sometime, if only to improve my pose skills.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could draw for basically that whole purpose.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you're citing your reference, I don't see any problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, as long as you're citing your references and not trying to hide it, it's fine.

What the others said. There's nothing wrong with referencing. There IS something wrong with tracing or exactly copying and claiming it's your own. If you're not good at drawing something, how else are you supposed to get better except through using another image as a guide (and practicing)?

A friend of mine who used to be a fanart BNF in a notoriously wanky fandom, always posted a link back to the references she used for poses and it didn't make people think less of her work.

I don't think this is a big deal at all. In fact it could be a really fun way to draw a couple you like! Just use a reference, like everyone else said :)

(I also kind of feel like there's a finite number of positions people can be in; some of them will always be rather similar)
