Doctor Who 50th Instant Reactions...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it but...
John Hurt didn't feel like a doctor to me. He was just John Hurt.
It started losing the plot towards the end.
I'm now so confused about the doctors personal timeline it's not funny.
I really would have liked it more if some of the other doctors had been there.

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would! I had been keeping my expectations low and these last couple of weeks I've been too busy to give it a lot of thought so it kind of snuck up on me. In the end, I was alternately touched and giggling out loud.

I think it was a good thing that they didn't do a huge reunion episode. I liked the little touches, like the policeman walking past the wall and the photo board in the Black Archive.

One thing we didn't get that I wanted was any more info on what happened to Eight.

I liked it but I have not watched since 10 left so...

I'm just relieved they didn't do anything to ~besmirch Rose's character~ or ~endanger the ship~, because my sister would have gone off the fucking deep end, and everyone who deals with her would have suffered for it. As it is she's happily manic, which is tiring but infinitely preferable.

(I'm fine with the character and I'm fine with the ship, really, but the way she needs absolutely everyone and everything in New Who... and possibly Old Who... to come second to that or revolve around that or tie back to that is getting really old.)

Four and Twelve's cameos were brilliant. Disappointed we didn't get similar with Nine, but hey ho.

Aliens were dumb.
Saving Gallifrey stuff was cool, I was afraid everyone would push the button but it didn't, so yay show for surprising me!
The way they used time travel was nicely integrated into the plot.
From what I understood when Rose looked into the TARDIS she went omniscient and the episode was about the changes she made while in there, so basically Rose Tyler saved the Time Lords by making a bunch of holes in time. This makes me happy because I loved Rose when she was Nine's or Ninth' (or however you call him) companion.
Also, I haven't seen any DW episode since Vampires in Venice so I have no idea what is the thing with the Doctor's tomb on planet-whose-name-sounds-like-Trent-Reznor.

Ooo, should've realized that had already aired for some people. (It's airing here tonight.)

At least you liked it and didn't hate it entirely? That's more than I was expecting from most fans.

Did you watch it on VOD or something that it was delayed? It aired at the exact same time all over the world, including in the cinema.

I don't know where elaminator saw it, but BBC America re-ran it in the evening and some people may have missed that it aired first in the afternoon because Doctor Who is usually on in the evenings.

I liked it more than I thought I would, which surprised me. (Out of 10 I give it a 6.5.)

I'm not sure what Hurt being the 12th Doctor will do to the Doctor Who plot (if any), as a forgotten Doctor is pretty important, I would think.

I wish there had been more previous Doctor appearances, but having Baker at the end was a nice touch.

I still think it felt more like a long Doctor Who movie than a 50th celebration, but I liked seeing 10 and Rose again. But the green screen did drive me mad.

Yay for the Doctor not committing mass murder!

he wasn't the 12th Doctor though, he was like...8.5 or something. Poor Eight.

Anyone have a link to a streaming version? Project Free TV has failed me.

Thanks!

I liked that the Doctor destroyed the Time Lords. Not a fan of retconning that, at all.

I used to like Moffat's writing, but now I find it too gimmicky, with too little attention to characterisation. I've been gradually losing interest since Let's Kill Hitler.

I hated that they retconned it too. It was just a bunch of bullshit imo. Tbh the whole special was underwhelming for me.

I didn't expect a lot of the other Doctors, for simple logistical reasons. Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee are gone, they have to come up with good reasoning to explain the aging of most of the others, and I doubt Eccleston would have agreed to come back anyway.

And fridge logic I have is that Hurt isn't supposed to feel much like the Doctor, because he's the one who wasn't "The Doctor".

I did however like the little flash of Twelve in there.
