How long until you give up on a fic?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
How long a hiatus or gap in updates until you give up and stop checking and sadly admit that the fic will forever be a WiP?

Depends, if it's something that I have to manually check to see if it updated; maybe three months? More if I know I started reading it in the middle of a school year, or something similar.

If I can just click a couple of buttons, and have updates automatically sent to me, though, I never give up. >_>

Never! I keep a folder of dead fic to check like once every 6 months.

+1

I've seen seemingly dead fics update after years.

If I really like the fic, this is what I do, yeah.

I wish I had that confidence....there was ONE fic in all my years that I kept up with every great once in a while. And that was a pokemon fic that was written way back in like..2000 and the author promised to finish it.

Lo and behold, about 4 years later, the last two parts were added....and considering how long they were it doesn't surprise me it took him that long. O_o

That waiting left me happy cause I thought the epic ending was well worth the wait.

Depends. If it's on ao3 I never give up, just keep subscribed. If it's somewhere I have to go and check, probably about a month. Maybe check back in once in awhile but not really expect anything.

I subscribe to them and then forget to check up on it, so I can go years before I notice a fic is dead...and by then I figure I may as well leave it

just in case

Well, I've left a fic cold for over a year, and then gone back and finished it. So, over a year at least before I officially give up. I may drift away before that.

Usually six months. But I have continued checking even after one year, if the author has showed some signs of life, such as giving an explanation for the hiatus or answering the comments.

Subscribing/story alerts mean never having to give up.

This. Sometimes I've been pleasantly surprised.

On kmeme fics where I can't do that, though, it's usually about a month. sometimes I save the link so I can go back later if it ever occurs to me to wonder "whatever happened to that one fic?" And then, again, sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.

I'll keep going until they announce they are doing a "re-write", that is the death knell for me.

A few weeks into a month or two. I've only gotten overly attached to a couple of fics like that, but it doesn't really matter since I have them subscribed on AO3 so I'll get an email if there's a new chapter.

One time there was a WIP seemingly whithered away and it updated 6 months- 1 year later. It had been so long I'd forgotten about it.

A few months or so for an average story. But for a very special, amazing story? Never! Unless it has been so long that I've actually forgotten, lol. Right now the only WIP I'm reading is phoenixdown7's Moving On. She has had some pretty epic gaps between chapters, but the updates are always worth waiting for, imo. I always hold out hope that it will keep going until the end.

I found this fic that had been much dead like a year. It was good and I was bummed that it wouldn't ever continue. Then lo and behold, over a year later I ran across it by coincidence and it had been finished! So, there are people who appreciate updates, even if it's been a long time.

I kept checking a WIP for eight years. I kept that link through five e-mail address changes. They finally updated last year.

I wish they hadn't. Oh god I wish they hadn't.

eta: If you're considering updating your own WIP you probably should though, ignore my anecdata.
