IIRC he's an uber powerful dog-like spirit monster who's already lived several centuries by the time the series begins, and he's still relatively young for one of his kind. So it's to be expected, if he doesn't die in battle, he's going to live for several centuries more.

"Mayfly-December Romance" is a term for a relationship in which one of the pair is going to live much, much longer than the other (usually supernaturally-derived), so that the other partner has a lifespan like a mayfly in comparison.
