End of an era

John Carmack has left id Software to work on Oculus Rift.

For those of you who don't know of him, he's basically the programming genius who coded the Doom and Quake engines. He's been in the business for over twenty years, is basically the smartest man in the industry with absolutely no ego to match, and to give you an idea of his influence, parts of the code he wrote for the original Quake (which, by the way, came out in 1996) runs through every Call of Duty and Valve Software game.

This is totally within character for him. It's never been about the games, strictly, for him -- games just presented an interesting programming challenge. But at this point there really isn't a lot for him to do anymore as we've hit a plateau in the sort of things we can wring out of gaming tech.

Between this and the 20th anniversary of Doom's release coming up in less than a month it feels like the end of an era. Several eras, really, if you want to include the next-gen platform releases.
