Any jazz music recommendations?

[personal profile] loracarol 2013-11-23 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The Tiana secret reminded me that I've been trying to get more into jazz (because I like what I've heard, but when it comes to listening to more, I don't really know where to start).

Does anyone have any recommendations?

If it helps, I personally like it when you can hear more than just the trumpet? I don't know if that makes any sense, but long trumpet solos aren't really my thing.

Thank you in advance!

What have you already checked out? I'll drop recommendations for Rhapsody in Blue and Take Five regardless, but it would help if we knew what you'd already heard.

I'm also going to recommend the Copper Street Brass Quintet (http://www.youtube.com/user/CSBQ) because I saw them live and they were awesome, although I was much more into their classical stuff. They did a very good version of Blue Rondo a la Turk. And it's not just trumpets!

I like Rhapsody in Blue, and I'll try and get you the list of what I've listened to once I'm at home and at my computer again. :3 Thank you for the other recs too, though, I'll listen to them ASAP.

Start with Miles Davis - Kind of Blue. It's mostly trumpet (that was Miles' thing) but the man was a huge influence, and Kind of Blue is possibly his most well-known album.

You may also want to consider Bohren & der Club of Gore's Sunset Mission. Bohren is a weird band, and their sound changes frequently. They've been moving further and further towards a more ambient sound, but Sunset Mission is pretty much straight out of a million film noirs. (I do recommend their other work, it's just not what you're looking for mostly)

If a mix of trip-hop and ambient with the jazz is your thing, give Ulver's Perdition City a try.

You could look into jazz pianists like Thelonious Monk.

My personal favorite jazz musician is Art Blakey but there may be more trumpet in his music than you want.

That's a pretty cool name, I'll look into that. And I'll give Art a listen to anyway, can't hurt, right?

If you're looking for an intriguing jazz sound, I love Dave Brubeck's "Jazz Impressions of Japan" album. He did one for Europe too, but I haven't heard it yet.

Dave Brubeck is AMAZING. I love his stuff. I had a big thing for jazz a few years ago and wish I could remember more of the names.

You can't go wrong with the greats like Charlie parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and Thelonious Monk. A lot of their music leans on the Bebop end of things.

If you are looking for something modern, I'd recommend Bela Fleck and the Flecktones because jazz banjo is awesome, Tribal Tech, Vital Information, and Bill Frisell. They tend to lean more on the Fusion end of things.

But if I could recommend one thing it would be Avishai Cohen. My favorite album of all time (not just jazz) is his album, Continuo. I'm not sure how to describe his work, but it's wonderful.
