I've realized that I have a penchant for using the "Arieth and Bob" trope
(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 01:34 am (UTC)(link)In my main work it's mostly normal names, a few perhaps sounding odd because they're from other countries.
In another it's part of the plot , where there's a bunch of kids working as bandits for their dwarf 'mother' and they're all named for numbers.
and then this other story where it's just straight up characters with quirky names partly because of the society where that kind of thing is normal and partly because of author appeal.
Would this make people write off my work as bad?
Re: I've realized that I have a penchant for using the "Arieth and Bob" trope
you gotta not worry about that shit and let the work speak for itself
if it helps I have a town called PORSTMOUGH in SWEATERVEST COUNTY. I'm gonna make it work.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 02:14 am (UTC)(link)I think I just find myself doing quirky names as an author appeal thing. I have fun with it, and while I'll try to do it well and make it work, I'll be damned if I'm not going to have fun with it. Because I write for fun.

Yeah. I gotta remember to have fun. Everyone should remember to have fun.

That actually does sound believable and cool!
