While I do wish fandom in general wasn't so focused into shipping, I do not see this as a WOMENSSS thing, and I actually believe that is a popularity thing in a way. Things get noticed they are popular, and since shipping is all the rage, that's what we get.

And I truly believe that is not that these shippers only care about shipping and don't care about the other issues in the source material, but shipping is was brings more interaction.

I think this because I have seen some of the most interesting and passionate opinions about plot and setting and all that from fans that you would only call shippers based on their fandom interactions.
