Gay people use the term faggot to describe themselves. Black people use the term nigger to describe themselves.

It's not offensive unless it's a member of our out-group looking in and calling us that. As a gay person, I call myself a faggot all the time, and I call my other gay friends faggots, and no one minds. They're not always offensive terms. :/

A lesbian friend of mine says that those who think like you do are the reason out of group people think its okay to call them that in the first place.

Honestly? I don't mind being called a faggot by a member of my out-group, unless it's clear that the word has ill intentions behind it. Simply stating the word isn't going to offend me at all.

Your lesbian friend sounds like a total bitch. Sorry, just because she's gay doesn't mean that she can speak for all gay people. Same with me, of course. I can't speak for all of us, just myself and those of my friends who happen to be gay. And what I'm trying to get across to you is purely semantic: that it's not always an offensive term. I'm not in any way asking you to start using the terms, but please try not to get your knickers in a twist every time you hear the word, for heaven's sake.

And - yes. Endearments. Not everyone has to think like you do, or has the same social norms.

I live in near an area where a lot of gays live. I've spoken to a whole lot of them and have several friends and even an old piano teacher who gay. Very few think like you do.

I can see that. Some are more sensitive to words than others I guess. But I personally still can't see how it makes it okay.

No, that's her opinion based on the shit she has to deal with from your mindset. You don't have a right to call one of my close friends that, thanks. In my experience, gay people do not want to be called a faggot. They find it mean regardless of how you say it. When I hear it, it offends me and I disapprove. But really, what the hell am I going to do? March up to the one who said it and lecture them? Sadly there are some pretty crappy people in the world. I will not be happy to hear it and yeah, I'm going to get upset and pissed off. But I'm not going to jump on everyone I hear say it. It's their choice.

I was being sarcastic. I can't say I understand how it would be an endearment at all, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Some people will self-identify as faggots. We're reclaiming the word, sort of like we're reclaiming queer. That has absolutely nothing with how troll here is using the word. Rather than destigmatizing "faggot", s/he's reinforcing heteronormativity by reminding everyone that "faggot" is meant to be insulting.
