That's an understandable reason. I think an updated Holmes requires an enormous suspension of disbelief because policing has changed since the 19th century.

That too. Back in the 19th century, Holmes's abilities and methods were completely out of the scope of the police's detective capabilities in terms of creativity and effectiveness. His ways of figuring things out were really unheard of. Nowadays, canon!Holmes's methods would be completely outdated, imprecise, and clumsy in comparison to modern techniques, not to mention being common knowledge. So it's not just the setting you have to update, you have to update Holmes's methods too, and people have varying opinions about how good or believable a job Sherlock did in updating that aspect.
