Yes. That's it, I think. The idea that sadness is more deep or more meaningful than happiness. If angst just being through in there for the sake of being there then it's like... what you said.

I like angst, but only when it's eventually followed by, "You know what? Fuck this, I can get through this." Everlasting angst is sooooo booooooring, especially when it's canon because the characters just stop developing altogether to, like, become the manifestation of their own sadness, or something. I can't understand why ANYONE would find that interesting, which is why I left CLAMP finally :(

Seriously. Angst is only good when characters get OVER it 'cause then it's like OH HEY YOU OVERCOME STUFF and it's like, they get STRONGER because of it not like they SPIRAL INTO A NEVERENDING WELL OF DESPAAAAAAAAAAAIR

That is EXACTLY what I mean, RAHRRRR. Maturation >>>>>>>>>> perpetual emo ANY DAY OF THE FUCKING WEEK. I mean, I love it when characters get really messed up and put through tons of shit but only because what I really want to see is how they'll ultimately...come to terms with it. THERE'S A BETTER WORD FOR THAT but it has slipped my mind and now it's bugging me a lot. :(

And yet if you try to raise the idea to people that seeing a character overcome things and mature is more entertaining than whining angst they get all shocked. How could anything be better than perpetual emo angst and stagnant characters? And you get made out to be some kind of happy freak because you're not as DEEP and DARK as they are.

Because a character dealing with problems not by emoing about it is never deep, apparently.
