Shaw is an amazing character in general, and the way the kid thing was handled was SO refreshing. Like, she didn't get attached just because it was a cute little kid, she got attached because the kid was smart and they had things in common and understood her, too. It was wonderfully done.

Yes, this, and also? Shaw's version of "get attached" is her own, and there's nothing sappy about it. It's more like she develops a sense of respect for the kid, and whatever emotional element goes along with that is very muted, as all Shaw's emotions are.

This show manages to make me like things that on other shows will make me nope out in a heartbeat. Cf: Bear; and that one episode where they have to take care of a baby for a couple days. I despise "they get a dog" and especially "Watch these two clueless dudes deal with a baby." And yet I adore Bear, and the episode with the baby didn't go to any of the ridiculous places that trope usually goes.
