Bashing fic

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
The ones that are written to bash a plot twist, a character derailment, an adaptation, a particular characters, whatever. Do you approve of them in general? Do you approve of any of them?

Every now and then there's the rare instance of someone writing it so wittily over-the-top that it's obviously just them having fun with their opinion, and I'm cool with that. Sometimes even if I don't agree with the opinion, it's still funny!

I really only object when the fic is written with the intent of seriously trying to make other people believe that hating such-and-such, usually by twisting circumstances around so that they are not at all what actually happened in canon, or other misleading stuff like shoddy characterization. (AUs are a different story, of course - I'm talking about the ones where the author really seems to think that so-and-so canonically good but hot-tempered character is an abusive spouse or something and doesn't treat it as a "what if".)

I enjoy them when they are bashing something I really, really, really don't like. Unless they go too far, in which case I'll end up feeling sorry for the object of the bashing anyway.

No, I don't like them, no matter how well written they are.

I am of the opinion you can write a fic that focuses on the things you want to see more without the need to gloat how superior you are to the rest of the fandom. Passive-agressive comments on how sad is that people enjoy X while obviously Y is superior also counts.

I once read a fic that was intelligent, well thought, with an interesting premise, it made me reconsider canon with another fresh point of view. The bashing of the part of the fandom I'm part of on the author's notes turned me off and prevented me from letting review/rec it (I rec fics on my tumblr) and now I pretend it doesn't exist. A shame though, it was a good fic, but it did piss me off.

As long as they are tagged so I can read the bashing ones I like, and avoid the ones I don't like, then fine. Nothing wrong with a good bash fic if the mood takes you. It is authors who try to hide their bash fics to try and boost reader numbers or convert people to bashing the characters they bash that washes me the wrong way. If I were to skip their bash fic if it were marked, why in blue blazes do they think that I'll like it if it isn't?

No, never.

They're usually poorly written, so in general, no.

There's a very few that I do like. Usually only if they're in response to something that insulted the canon first.

I only approve of the ones that bash a character I don't like. ;)
