I think it'd be just plain ridiculous if Ramsay, the most sexually sadistic and fucked up character in the series who's clearly got a disturbing fixation on Reek, never once sexually abused Theon beyond the Jeyne incident. Especially when you got things like him watching Theon have a bath, kissing him, calling him "his Reek", castrating him, telling him he can't take his clothes off unless he tells him, involving him in sexual situations, etc. I feel like vague little things like that hint towards sexual abuse.

OTOH if GRRM ever went out of his way to say he wasn't I'd probably rage a little, mostly because I'm tired of reading page after page of women getting raped with no instance or mention of men getting raped in sight (even in situations where it'd make sense like at the Wall) beyond that one boy on Victarion's fleet. It's unrealistic and adds to the misguided belief that men never get raped.

Srsly. Well said about men getting raped, too.

The rape of Theon is no more than implied compared to what happens to women, women being routinely reminded of rape, men talking about it, and this thing about pink being one of Ramsay's colors? (In the book, don't know about the show) Sounds like a bad stereotype.

To be fair, pink is the Bolton color because it's the color of flayed flesh, any unfortunate implications in that case are incidental I'd say.

Also, Theon is still one out of the few POV characters to undergo any sort of sexual abuse/torture or dehumanization and his is prolonged and rather extreme. Though it bothers me that GRRM had to go and include Jeyne, as though he had to outdo himself and make the most grotesque sexual abuse be done to a woman (or 13 year old girl in this case), yet again -_-

Well.

Not that I was ever planning to, but this thread has pretty much convinced me that I never want to read these effing books.

Jesus fucking Christ, GRRM.

Yeeeaah, that's the unfortunate thing about ASOIAF. On one hand you got a series full of well written, compelling female characters with varying strengths & weaknesses, on the other you have to endure all the background rape that happens to so many non-POV female characters (although thankfully they're not descriptive or graphic IIRC) and just general problematic shit (like Dany's relationship with Drogo, just ew). And TBF, though the series is dark as a whole, the Theon/Ramsay/Jeyne arc is a "special" kind of disturbing even for the books.

The characters are all so interesting, but GRRM does make it hard to like the series sometimes. The books do a slightly better job with the problematic stuff than the fucking terrible show, at least.
