By starting with the "soulmate" nonsense you already lost me. Nonsense nonsense.

Even the concept of soulmate is annoying to me, it's a cheap cop-out in fiction (which as amny things, can be pulled off with enough suspension of disbelief) and an fallacy in real life at worst, a cute moniker for a relationship that stood the pass of time at best.

Now try to justify grooming a baby to be your lover with the concept of soulmates and I'm flinging all my shit on you.

I assumed the purpose of equating soulmates with imprinting was to discredit the soulmate concept, not legitimize imprinting.

I admit, haven't read the series but to me it sounded like a way to justify pairing the spares - in this case, the main character's rejected love interest and her "almost as good as her mama!" demon!baby.

(Maybe the author became fond of the werewolf as she was writing him and, rather than leaving him completely rejected, wanted him to have someone in the end? Someone who is an offshoot of the main character so it's almost like he got the girl he wanted? Guh! That's a creepy idea to me!)

It's just creepy! I agree that the imprinting was a cop-out FOR a cop-out, but pairing Jacob with the baby? Horrible idea from every standpoint I can think of. Not just the moral implications are just too skeevy, but writing-wise is just cheap as hell. It just reeked of pairing the spares, and the age difference and ridiculous context (including the fact that he was in love with her mother) just makes it a crappy idea with horrible execution.

And I even thing that Jacob/Renesme could have worked. Why not just tag that on the epilogue? Have Jacob "go away" for a couple of years, and then upon his return meet Renesmee (all grown up)? Meyer could have even written a cute story with Jacob meeting her not realizing who she was at first.

I think your idea for a fix is quite good. But your idea - of having them meet after the demon!baby grew up - would require two things:

1.) Work on the writer's part and
2.) The writer allowing some other character to be the center of attention for at least a chapter.

And some writers just aren't willing to allow that second thing.
